Have you ever watched wisps of smoke drifting from smokestacks and wondered how much energy they’re uselessly pumping into the air? Maybe less than you might think! Saving energy is a huge and costly problem for factory bosses and it’s one reason they often install devices called heat exchangers to salvage as much heat as possible from waste gases. Heat exchangers have lots of other familiar uses too. Engines in cars, ships, and planes use heat exchangers to work more efficiently, and if you have a refrigerator or an air-conditioner in your home, those are using heat exchangers too. So what exactly are heat exchangers and how do they work? Let’s take a closer look! Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Heat exchangers are used in many engines and machines to improve their efficiency. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
What is a heat exchanger?
Suppose you have a gas central heating furnace (boiler) that heats hot-water radiators in various rooms in your home. It works by burning natural gas, making a line or grid of hot gas jets that fire upward over water flowing through a network of pipes. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana. As the water pumps through the pipes, it absorbs the heat energy and heats up. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana. This arrangement is what we mean by a heat exchanger: the gas jets cool down and the water heats up. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
A heat exchanger is a device that allows heat from a fluid (a liquid or a gas) to pass to a second fluid (another liquid or gas) without the two fluids having to mix together or come into direct contact. If that’s not completely clear, consider this. In theory, we could get the heat from the gas jets just by throwing cold water onto them, but then the flames would go out! The essential principle of a heat exchanger is that it transfers the heat without transferring the fluid that carries the heat. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Diagram showing how a simple shell and tube heat exchanger works. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
How does a simple heat exchanger work? A hot fluid (shown in red) flows through a tube coiled inside a larger shell through which another, colder fluid (shown in blue) is running in the opposite direction. Heat is exchanged by the fluids: the hot fluid cools down and the cold fluid warms up, without them actually coming into contact and mixing. This is a simplified example of a shell and tube exchanger: generally, heat exchangers of this design have many thin tubes running through a large shell. What are heat exchangers used for?

You can see heat exchangers in all kinds of places, usually working to heat or cool buildings or helping engines and machines to work more efficiently. Refrigerators and air-conditioners, for example, use heat exchangers in the opposite way from central heating systems: they remove heat from a compartment or room where it’s not wanted and pump it away in a fluid to some other place where it can be dumped out of the way. Before choosing a ventilation fan, make sure it’s one that will be adequate for the size of your bathroom. You’ll also want to prioritize your wants and needs with regard to noise level and features so that you’ll get maximum satisfaction for your budget. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Proper Venting
Unfortunately, bathroom ventilation fans often are set up so that the exhaust air to the space between ceiling joists, especially if the bath is located on a lower level toward the middle of the house. Venting to the space between joists or into an unheated attic simply dumps excess moisture into the worst possible conditions—closed, dark spaces where humidity condenses on cold surfaces and mold can spread, damaging floors, walls and ceiling materials. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
A smarter, healthier alternative is to connect your bathroom exhaust fan to vent ducts that channel the exhaust outside your home. Building codes typically specify this solution; regardless, it’s the most sensible and safest method. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Keep in mind that properly vented ventilation fans also suck a lot of heated air out of your house. A remedy is to install a heat-exchange ventilator fan. These fans use warm, outgoing air to heat cooler, incoming replacement air. Heat exchanger models sell for about twice as much as standard bathroom ventilation fans. Bathroom Ventilation Fans
Air Flow Capacity
Bathroom ventilation fans have different airflow capacities, measured in cubic feet per minute (cfm). To get the right fan for your bathroom, use the guidelines set by the Home Ventilating Institute: Your fan should have 1 cfm for every square foot of floor space in your bathroom. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
For bathrooms larger than 100 square feet, figure your cfm requirements by adding:
Smart Options
Motion sensor activation turns on the fan when someone enters the bathroom. The fan speed can be pre-set to a low volume to remove the moisture of everyday tasks, such as shaving, and switch-activated for high-volume tasks, such as showering. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Overhead lighting can be switch-activated or turned on by a motion sensor.
Energy Efficiency
Bathroom ventilation fans that earn an EnergyStar label for the efficient operation must be independently certified by the Home Ventilating Institute or the Air Movement and Control Association. The standards apply to any lighting options, too. EnergyStar ventilation fans use about 60 percent less energy than standard fans. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Many of today’s bathroom ventilation fans feature quiet motors that let them perform at extremely low noise levels. These same motors are designed for energy efficiency. Panasonic’s WhisperGreen line of ventilation fans, for example, employ a DC (direct current) motor that’s quieter and more energy-efficient than EnergyStar criteria. In some states, bathroom ventilation fans are required to meet building codes. In California, for example, Title 24 sets guidelines for the overall energy efficiency of new homes and additions. Bathroom ventilation fans are part of the HVAC systems that must be evaluated for energy efficiency under Title 24 before building permits can be issued. Whole House Solutions & ASHRAE 62.2.
Enviro Tec ventilation fans are a great solution to meet the now frequent whole house ventilation requirements and energy efficient building codes brought on by green building programs such as LEED and ENERGY STAR®. Most of these programs reference a widely-used residential ventilation standard known as ASHRAE 62.2. ASHRAE refers to the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, the group that developed the standard. Since these requirements typically call for a fan to run continuously, the power, energy efficiency and quiet operation of Enviro Tec premium ventilation products are a perfect fit. They can be a two-for-one solution to both traditional and whole house ventilation needs. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Widest Variety of ENERGY STAR® Certified Models.
Choosing an ENERGY STAR® Certified ventilation fan saves money as it uses up to 65% less energy than standard fans and cost less than one dollar per year to operate with normal usage. As newer homes are now being built tighter for efficiency, ENERGY STAR® has become the wiser and more popular option, since fans must operate for longer periods of time to keep indoor air fresh and clean. Broan-Enviro Tec offers more ENERGY STAR® Certified models than anyone in the industry including fans, fan/lights, humidity sensing models, recessed and decorative fan/lights. Panasonic pleased to offer the most technologically advanced and energy efficient ventilation fan. WhisperGreen Select allows you to customize the fan to suit your customers’ particular needs. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
As with all Panasonic fan and fan/light units, the WhisperGreen Select UL listed for installation into a tub or shower enclosure when GFCI protected.
It is best to have an idea how you or your customer would like the WhisperGreen Select fan to operate before you start the installation. Depending on the desired function, you can choose from one of three wiring methods. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
We’ll cover the three methods in this tutorial and explain the fan’s operation with each method. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Before we get started on wiring methods, it’s important to note that every base model WhisperGreen Select is three fans in one right out of the box. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
You’ll find a CFM selector switch on the fans motor plate which allows you to set the speed of a WhisperGreen Select fan (50-80-110 or 110-130-150 CFM, depending on the model). Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Simply select the speed you would like the fan to operate at by moving the selector switch to the desired CFM. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Upon opening the fans junction box cover, you will find that the WhisperGreen Select contains a black, white, and green wire leads along with two red wire leads on the fan only. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
The fan/light units have an extra black and white lead for the light kit.
Please note: you will need to adhere to and obey all local wiring codes.
Method 1: only control fan from wall switch
The first method is the most basic installation method. In this use, we’ll be wiring the fan for on and off using as a spot ventilation fan, and we’re not looking to add any of the plugs and play modules for the WhisperGreen Select. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Bring power from the panel to a wall switch.
At the wall switch, attach the wire to the power conductor (the black cable) at the line side of a single-pole switch. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
From the switch, continue the run with the power conductor—again, the black cable—connected to the load side of the switch up into the fan junction box connected to the black conductor from the fan’s motor. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
The neutral conductors, the white cables, connect together at the switch box and continue to the junction box where it conducted to the white lead in the junction box.
The ground wires brought up to the wall switch continues up to the ground lead, the green wire, from the junction box. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
The two red wires remain untouched. There is no need to do anything with them.
When using this method, it’s important to note that if you choose to have any of the plugs and play modules at a later time, they will only work if the on the switch is in the ‘on’ position. Otherwise, there will be no power to the fan. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Method 2: Automatic operation
Using this method, you would be using the motion sensor module and/or the condensation sensor to either turn the fan on or off. Or, if using the continuous run module to boost the fan from low to high speed. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
If you choose this wiring method, you will not have manual control of the fan. You will be relying on the sensors only to control the fan. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Method 3: Manual control with wall switch and sensor controls
The third method we’ll discuss is for manual control of the fan with a wall switch in conjunction with any of the plug and play modules.
With this wiring method, you can still use both the motion sensor and the condensation sensor modules as secondary control however, please note that these controls will only be active when the wall switch is in the off position. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana. With the switch in the on position, the signal loop will completed and the fan will, in the active mode. The motion sensor and/or condensation sensor will not affect the fan at this point. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Fan/light models expand the wall switch options
When wiring a fan/light model, you will need a separate circuit for the light switch as you cannot supply line voltage to the red wires. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
To wire a fan/light, you can use two separate signal pole switches, and run separate switches for the light kit and the signal loop for the fan motor. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Or, if you prefer, you can use a single pole over single pole switch, breaking the common tab on the line side of the switch.
Use one switch to control power to the light and use the other switch to control the signal loop for the fan motor.
Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
If you would like to use one switch to have the light come on when you turn the fan on or to its boost mode.
You can use a double-pole, single throw switch. Use one pole to control power to the light kit.
And use the other pole to connect the wires to the the signal loop for the fan motor.
Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
Using this method when the switch turned on.
The light will turn on and the fan will either turn on or move into boost mode.
When the switch turned off, the light will turn off, but the fan will continue to operate at full speed.
Until the delay timer times out. Condenser tube cleaning Baton Rouge Louisiana.
